Kenny Phillips, Defense Come Up Big in Big Blue’s Win

In the first ever regular season game in the New Meadowlands Stadium, the New York Football Giants defeated the Carolina Panthers 31-18.  Quarterback Eli Manning went 20-30, threw for 258 yards and 3 touchdowns but also had 3 interceptions.  The game was very sloppy with a total of 7 turnovers in between the two teams.  All three of Eli’s interceptions were off tipped balls by the receivers.  The Giants defense game out very strong and got plenty of pressure on Matt Moore.  The Giants had 4 sacks during the game from Osi Umenyiora, Mathias Kiwanuka (2), and half a sack from Chris Canty and Barry Cofield, all which came in the second half.  What I was impressed with the most was how the secondary played.  Kenny Phillips made a touchdown saving tackle with one arm on DeAngelo Williams, Terrell Thomas played great coverage on Dwayne Jarrett who only had 2 receptions, Antrel Rolle had 7 tackles and there were 3 interceptions made by Terrell Thomas, Kenny Phillips, and Deon Grant.  The secondary made very big plays in the red zone.  The wide recievers played well except for the 3 catches that went through their hands that resulted in Eli Manning’s interceptions.  The running backs were completely shut down in the first half with only 6 yards on the ground.  In the second half, Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw combined for over 120 yards rushing.   Next Sunday the Giants play Eli’s big brother Peyton and his Indianapolis Colts.  The Colts are always a good team and have won 12 games in their last 6 seasons.  The Colts lost their season opener to arch rival, the Houston Texans which means the Colts will come out looking for a victory and will do anything to get that.  The Giants can beat the Colts if they play mistake-free football and run the clock down.  The Colts gave up 250 yards to Arian Foster so the Giants should take advantage of their bad run defense and run the ball a lot with Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw.  I  would also like to congratulate Eli Manning, Justin Tck, and Chase Blackburn for being selected team captains.  GO BIG BLUE!!
